This is my last post. This movie was created by me and I hope it works because I have spent about 4 hours trying to upload it to this page. To sum up everything that you can find on this blog I created a movie. The movie was created in power point and is a basic outline of all the topics that deal with the injustice of the polluting of a grand resource. The Columbia River is a large sewer as it stands now and this video shows why. I would encourage you to research these topics in more detail if they interest you. Hope you have enjoyed reading this blog, this will be my final post.

Due to lack or information found on the internet, this is all speculation. The information that is to follow is my opinion on the subject and if you have information pertaining to this topic I would encourage you to share.

People like products that are cheap, this way we can save money. When the voters vote to tighten the regulations on industries this causes the industries to boost their prices to be able to afford to conform to the new regulations. So if the purchasers want lower prices on the products in which they are purchasing then they should not complain about the pollution in the river. A common phrase may be used “the solution to pollution is dilution”. This simply means that by discharging pollutants into the Columbia River is solving the pollution problem because the Columbia River is a large resource with unlimited water flow to dilute the pollution to an acceptable standard.

Canadian Pollution

A smelter company in British Columbia is being attacked by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is a United States based program. The reason the EPA is attacking the smelter company in British Columbia, Canada, is because the pollution created by smelting is polluting the United States portion of the Columbia River. The company titled Teck Cominico is seeking a diplomatic solution. The company is going through the Canadian Government to deal with the US Government counterparts. The smelting operation produces 10 to 20 million tons of slag each year, slag is the pollution produced by pollution which contains lead, arsenic and mercury. The slag once in the river in Canada flows down into the Columbia river portion titled Lake Roosevelt, which is used by over 1 million boaters, swimmers and fishers a year.

Wastewater Treatment Facilities

As some of my readers may know, I am currently studying to become a civil engineer. With this education one aspect of study is water resources and in that field there is a class called water wastewater treatment design. I have taken this class, and with this, there will be no attached sources, it is my education at work.

Every city has a place that they discharge their wastewater, usually in the nearest river. Spokane discharges into the Spokane River, Pullman into the Palouse River, Longview discharges into the Cowlitz River and the Columbia River, which then flows into the Columbia river, etc. Needless to say there are a number of cities throughout this state that discharge their wastewater into what eventually comes the Columbia River. Some people may see this as a problem, the only problem that arises from this is the Chlorine.

Water discharged from a wastewater treatment facility is generally able to be drank from on the spot. This blog is not about the pollution being discharged, it is putting a stop to some of the myths that the wastewater treatment facilities are adding to the pollution in the river.

Hanford: Reshaping History

Hanford Nuclear Reservation is a government facility located on the Columbia River. This facility was part of the Manhattan project, and is sometimes known as the Hanford Project. At Hanford the first plutonium reactor was created, the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan had plutonium from Hanford, WA.

As a result of the multiple reactors that were developed at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation approximately 1 terabecquerels, which is 10^12becquerels, and a becquerel is the SI derived unit of radioactivity, and 1 Bq = 1 /s or the rate at which it takes 1 nucleus to decay per second. The water was siphoned out of the Columbia River, and flowed through the cooling basins to cool the reactors. After the reactors the water flowed into a retention basin where the pollution is to settle out, for approximately 6 hours before it was discharged back into the Columbia River. The radiation developed in the water was not affected by the retention basin. Radioactive readings were evident in the water near the mouth of the Columbia off the coasts of Oregon and Washington.
